    Along with the usual municipal services of water, wastewater, refuse collection and police protection, Berlin is one of only 5 municipalities in Maryland which own and operate a not-for-profit electric utility.

  • MAYOR AND COUNCIL :  The Town’s governing body consists of an elected Mayor and 5  Councilmembers, representing the 4 Town voting districts and 1 at-large Council seat.  The Mayor and Council meets bi-monthly, on the second and fourth Mondays in the Council Chambers at Town Hall.

  • ADMINISTRATIVE (TOWN HALL):  The Town’s administrative offices are located at the corner of Bay and William Street.  The administrative staff consists of 10 employees under several different departments; the Administrative Director, the Finance Department, Code Enforcement, and Utilities.

  • POLICE PROTECTION :  The Town's Police Department is staffed with an appointed Chief, 15 sworn full-time officers, 4 dispatchers and 1 records clerk.  The Police Department provides 2 officers for uniformed security at the Atlantic General Hospital and has assigned 2 officers to the Worcester county Bureau of Investigation.

  • PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT:  The Public Works Department consists of 9 employees and is divided into Streets and Sanitation divisions with each section under its own supervisor who reports to the superintendent.
  • UTILITIES:  Berlin’s utilities' department is separated into four divisions: Administration, Water, Wastewater, and Electric.
  • FIRE COMPANY:  Fire protection is provided to Berlin and the surrounding area by the Berlin  Fire Company.  The Town contributes toward the operations budget of the Fire and Ambulance services, but the services are operated independently of the Town's authority.

  •  OTHER SERVICES:  There are a number of boards and commissions which oversee and perform various aspects of Town functions.  These boards primarily consist of volunteers appointed by the Mayor and Council to serve set terms.  Included are the Planning and Zoning Commission, Historic Commission, Parks Commission, Board of Elections Supervisors, Utility Commission, Ethics Commission and Housing Board of Review.  There is also a Commercial District Management Authority, whose Board members are elected from the Business Community.

    In July of 1992, the Town of Berlin implemented a mandatory recycling program.  There were many reasons for implementing this program - primarily economic, environmental, and resource conservation.

  • WHAT CAN BE RECYCLED?  While there are many types of materials that can be recycled, it is not currently practical for the Town to recycle all of them.  The types of materials that the Town does collect, and the preparation requirements are as follows:
  • WHAT KIND OF CONTAINER IS NEEDED? No special container is required for either household garbage or for recyclable materials, however metal drums are not acceptable, and neither are plastic cans larger than thirty (30) gallons of capacity..  Recycle containers need only be sturdy enough to be handled without bursting, and easily identifiable as containing recyclables.  Designate your recyclable containers by marking them, or by providing a container with a visual means of identifying the materials inside without opening the bag or lid.    Factory-made recycling containers are also available at many area merchants.

  • WHEN ARE COLLECTIONS SCHEDULED?  General refuse (regular household garbage) will be collected once per week and recyclables once per week.  If your general refuse is collected on Tuesday, then your recyclables will be collected on Monday, if your general refuse is collected on Thursday, then your recyclables will be collected on Friday.  In the event of a holiday, or other Town office closure, general refuse and/or recyclables will be collected on the next regularly scheduled day.
